Who you are matters

I am from San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley. Growing up, being cool meant having good grades, creating a startup, and winning the Intel Science Competition. I don't know where I am going, but I do know I would love to live in New York City for a while. I would also love the opportunity to live in Paris again (I studied abroad there last spring). I plan to get those places by securing jobs in those cities or applying for transfers. More immediately, I will be in San Francisco after graduation working for Deloitte.

I am like my parents in many ways. I have my father's temper, stubbornness, and intelligence. I have my mother's carelessness and strong sense of inertia. Because of how they raised me, I have grown to become logical, practical, and willful. However, since I was raised in a different country I have a lot of different ideological beliefs. I believe in freedom and the power of the individual, and my parents believe in familial piety and duty to your community.

I believe I have developed my own expectations of myself. When I was young, I operated under my parents' expectations but now I think my expectations of myself are even higher. I admire Emperor Wu Zetian, who was a woman who ruled China during the Zhou dynasty. In a country that has patriarchy embedded in its Confucian roots, she beat the odds, took power, and expanded the empire.

A wild animal I feel the most strongly connected to is the leopard, who is the most adaptable and cunning of all the big cats. My favorite interactions with trees can best be described by the word "komorebi", which is Japanese for "the light that dapples through the leaves of trees".

My sun and moon sign are Scorpio and my rising is Aquarius.

  1. I think it's really interesting that you mention how even though you are part of the same household, you and your parents share very different ideological beliefs due to the countries you were raised in.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. I think it is so great that you admire such a strong woman! It is so powerful to see female leaders in this world. I also really think it is great that you have expanded your expectation to go beyond just what your parents want from you. Your own motivation is the best motivation! :)

    Thanks for the awesome post!

  3. That's great that you now have your own expectations rather than only listening to that of your parents. Not that is wrong to listen to your parent's expectations, but I believe you will have a more complete a happier life by setting your own expectations. Good for you!

  4. I like the women you chose as your role model. I did not know about her before and I think she is a very unusual person to look up to. You definitely got me interested in her.

  8. The other animal I would have mentioned is the leopard. It is an incredible animal and I see why you chose it!
